Seven Steps when dealing with a spill

Quickly assess the spill and decide whether to handle the situation by yourself or if you require help. eg. Police, the fire brigade or a specialist spill response company

Identify the liquid you are dealing with and use Personal Protection Equipment recommended in the Material Safety Data Sheet. Appropriate PPE should be located in the spill response kit

Contain the spill quickly by surrounding the spill with the booms which should be firmly secured in place. If the liquid is unknown containment should not be attempted within a 25 metre radius

Convert the contained liquid to a solid by method of absorption. Use the absorbent pads/pillows/absorbent powder to absorb the spill by placing them over the liquid. Remove the saturated pads and replace as necessary

After usage, dispose of the spent absorbent products in the disposable bags ensuring that the bags are sealed with the cable ties provided. Final disposal of spent absorbent should be in accordance with Local Government Regulations

Report the spill on an Incident Report Form and hand to supervisor. Document the incident including: what happened, when it happened, where it happened, and what was done to eliminate or minimise the impact. This is the first step into an investigation of the incident in order to prevent this incident occurring again

Inspect and re-stock the kit as soon as possible to allow maximum capacity for future incidents. Call ESSSA 1300 SPILL (77455)
